Macarena Zilveti

Artist, Poet, Dreamer

About

Chilean born Macarena Zilveti came to the U.S, as a pre-adolescent, when her father was named Bolivian Consul in New York. Her earliest memories are of drawing, painting and going to New York City museums with her mother. She recalls looking at the beautiful art in museum catalogs her father brought home from his trips to Europe. One of her more triumphant moments as an adolescent was winning a poster contest sponsored by Baskin Robbins with her colorful rendition of a gallon of ice cream in tribute to the brand’s 31 flavors. This fueled her love for the arts. As an adolescent, she had hip operations which forced bed rest and was home schooled for two years. During this time, she became an avid reader in English and Spanish, thus strengthening her love for the written word. Zilveti later attended Moore College of Art and graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Zilveti lives in Miami, Florida where she shows regularly through South Florida galleries, alternative venues and events. Her poems has been featured in Linden Lane Magazine, the Pen Club book and others.

Artist Statement

My work isn’t about one subject or another, but rather, about events or thoughts that touch me. Much of my subject matter focuses on moments in time and doesn’t shy away from emotions. Breast cancer, for example, has played a large role in my family and many of my pieces have reflected this in one way or another. My work tends to focus on events that have occurred and have touched me deeply. Many of these themes have been chosen because of their injustice or impact on society. I’ve never really liked to explain a certain piece of work – I like the viewer to take away his or her own interpretation of the piece. There is no right or wrong but rather a feeling each person has after seeing a piece.
